Aw it was that bad, you still made your connection.
I rode the CSSSB in 1978when they were threatening to shut down passenger service. My mom put together a Miles like trip for me & my dad (I was 14):
1) she dropped us off at RTA rapid early am to Cleveland airport
2) united airlines 747 to Ohare. First time on a jumbo jet, largely empty in that regulated era. It’s next stop after ORD was Hawaii, so their were a bunch of vacationers drinking heavily
3) airport bus to downtown, there was no blue line to Ohare then.
4) South Shore to South Bend, that was the main event. Train was full of rail fans, taking pictures. The 1920s heavyweight cars were the rolling stock, they had a combine up front let fans ride in baggage compartment, and even a bit looking out the front next to engineer. Very fast running, saw ‘little Joe’ electric freight engine (look it up) . I think I still have my ‘save the cough shore’ lapel buttons they were selling. The station you arrived at on Amtrak was at that time the south shore station shared with Amtrak. So waited for hours there for the eastbound Lake Shore Ltd.
5) Amtrak in coach to Cleveland, remember going with my dad to incredibly smoky lounge car , get a Coke for me & a beer for him. On a real train too excited to sleep. But nothing to see in the dark. Arrived sometime in middle of night at the brand new Amshack on the lakefront.
6) taxi home.
Now if we just could’ve workedsome kind of boat into it. It was truly a Miles worthy day trip.
Luckily Indiana relented & agreed to subsidize the service, they got new cars in the 80 s I think. Very interesting they are actually extending the line. I wasn’t aware of that.
