A bonus feature of this fun video is that some of these small, midwestern downtowns look like really nice, fun places to visit. (In the daytime!)
The tracks in streets of Marietta OH is remains of an interurban that ran from there to Parkersburg WV that was abandoned in 1947. Company was part of Monongahela West Penn system according to ‘Interurban Railway in America’ . Tracks been waiting there a long time.
You can also cross the Muskingum river there on an old B&O swing bridge that has a pedestrian path attached to it. Interesting town.
Great trip, so sad the streamline style Greyhound station in Cleveland is closing, I caught bus there a lot…35 or more years ago.
Thurmond, WV is probably considered to be just a “stop” now because the actual Amtrak station is no longer staffed – but if it’s still technically an Amtrak station, then it’s most likely the least used one in the state. Why? Because Thurmond, WV only has a population of about six people. And, as for driving there to ride the train (or pick someone up who did) goes… Maybe if your vehicle is a high ground clearance 4WD that already has so many scratches and dents that a few more wouldn’t be noteworthy, I suppose.
Nonetheless, one can get there via Amtrak – three days per week. Bring your own food, water, DEET, tick-proof clothing, boots, machete, and medical supplies. Because none of that is available in Thurmond – and you might need all of it.
I’ve already done a video on Thurmond! It hasn’t been the least used in WV in several years, probably because of the national park designation for New River Gorge. We were able to hike for an hour or two to a nearby resort campsite!
