On February 19, 2022, the Boston Street Railway Association hosted a fantrip celebrating Boston’s 86-year trackless trolley history. It traversed the entire Cambridge trackless trolley system (including along the 72, which hasn’t seen electrified revenue service in almost 10 years) using a 2004 Neoplan AN440LF trackless trolley, a 2004 Neoplan DMA-460LF dual-mode articulated vehicle, and a 1995 Nova Bus RTS diesel bus. I traveled from Philly to Boston on an overnight Flixbus to experience the historic occasion. Boston’s trackless trolleys will continue to run in service on the 71 and 73 until they are retired from service in mid-March 2022.

Welp, there goes my childhood, in terms of transit at least :/ As a North Cambridge kid, I’d always get giddy when I was waiting for the 77 and the bus that came was a rare 77 trackless trolley or one of those tall cylindrical models
Still deceiving myself in the hope that it’s not too late…
“tall cylindrical models” is a description for the RTS I’ve never heard before.
