I wouldn't look too much into it, in Chicago there is a string of stations in a row with a shared platform- the longest station platform in the world. And in New York several stations are so close that trains are still exiting one station while entering another
They've gotten closer over time too. When they were lengthened for 6 car trains, Aquarium was extended westward and State was extended eastward.
Ah, yes. I didn't realize they extended the platforms towards each other, though.

Same thing with state street and downtown crossing that are so close on the orange line that you can even see state from downtown crossing
